January tends to steal the spotlight when it comes to resolutions and fresh starts. The turn of the calendar brings a rush of motivation, gym memberships spike, and business plans get dusted off. But what if we’ve been overlooking a far better time to reset?
For many of us, especially business owners and leaders, September brings its own kind of new year energy. And in many ways, it might be even more effective.
A season of clarity
After the (hopefully) slower pace of summer, we return to work with clearer minds and fresh energy. Time away often gives us the space to reflect on what we’re doing, and why we’re doing it. That headspace can be invaluable.
This seasonal shift mirrors the “back to school” feeling we knew as kids. There’s a quiet, collective gear-change in the air. And when harnessed well, it creates a perfect window to refocus.
A smarter way to set goals
Instead of launching into year-long goals in January when we’re often still recovering from the holidays and working in the dark (literally and figuratively), September offers a 90-day runway into the new year.
That’s long enough to make meaningful progress, but short enough to stay sharp and accountable.
You can use this final quarter of the year to:
- Test new habits before committing to them
- Prioritise what really matters before year-end pressures kick in
- Build momentum that carries into January, rather than starting from zero
It’s like giving yourself a head start before the rest of the world catches up.
Leading with intent, not tradition
One of the things I encourage in my mentoring work is to challenge assumptions about “when” we’re supposed to take action. Waiting for January just because it’s tradition doesn’t always serve us or our businesses.
The most effective leaders I work with take stock when it feels right, not when the calendar tells them to. They build in seasonal reflection, regular reset points, and responsive planning rather than relying on a single, high-pressure launchpad at the start of the year.
